Tourism and Hospitality Curriculum review to fit the needs of the Industry.
2 min read
The Kenya Utalii College is a government school of hospitality and tourism. They offer various courses to students who are passionate about the hospitality and tourism industry. The college has been running from 1957 when it was established under the Tourism Act to run as a Tourism College. The Tourism industry has been changing over time depending on the changes in customer preferences. There has been a need to evaluate the courses the college offers to students to ensure that they meet the industry requirements. The Board of directors of the college saw it a need to involve tourism sector players to ensure that they are in line with what the industry needs.
They set up the first meeting with government & tourism private sector players to critic the courses they offer. After this first meeting there was a need to improve some courses. It is after this meeting that they set out to host the symposium. Tourism parastatals, associations, tour operators, travel agents, hoteliers, chefs, alumni were in attendance to review the curricula. Tour operators Society of Kenya as an association was invited to share their reviews. The meeting started with an overview of what KUC is, what they offer and the objectives of the review. The college major objective is for the courses to be in line with their 2022-2027 strategic Plan while ensuring that they offer quality education, at a reasonable price & within a reasonable time period.
The quality level of their education wants to stand out to ensure the students who graduate are fully equipped and understand what they learn and the job market. The time spent doing certain courses is to be considered so that some courses are given enough time in class and also in the field depending on the course content. The price of the course is a considerable measure to give value depending on how much they charge. After the first session, there were breakout rooms where attendees were divided into as per their specialization. The hospitality, the front office, the housekeeping, the tourism, all too deeply evaluates the course offered.
The tourism break out room evaluated the entry requirements for some courses and the need to produce fully baked students who are ready for the job market. There was and insight on the need put into consideration destination marketing as a unit within the courses studied. Some of the courses should be open as refresher courses to individuals who have been in the industry but wish to test their knowledge. With minimum requirement and more practical’s, all courses were keenly evaluated as the panel shared their views.
Later the attendees set for the final meeting to combine their ideas and share them with the board of directors on their views. After these, the attendees were spoiled with a cocktail to crown the day. It is our wish that students who go through Utalii College are fully set to fit in the tourism industry.
Thanks @KUC for the invitation as a tourism player and stakeholder.
