Ondiri Wetlands, located in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, is a significant ecological site in Kenya. As one of the few remaining high-altitude wetlands in the country, it plays a crucial role in biodiversity conservation, water purification, and climate regulation. During the National Tree Planting Day set by the government, TOSK members took part in the restoration and conservation of this vital ecosystem by taking part in a tree planting activity.
Ondiri Wetlands provides a habitat for various birds contributing to Kenya’s rich biodiversity. The wetlands act as a natural water reservoir, replenishing groundwater and providing water to nearby communities. They are a critical part of the local hydrological cycle, helping to maintain water quality and availability.
The National Tree Planting Day brought together Friends of Ondiri Wetlands, residents of Kikuyu, Tour Operators, National Youth Service, Kenya Forest Service and sustainability enthusiasts for the common goal. This led to fostering of meaningful partnerships, residents interacting with the area MP and a long term plan to save Ondiri Wetland.
